On Fri. Oct. 6 the Santa Fe Cross Country teams competed in the Pre-State meet at Santa Fe High School. This meet is an exhibition type race where teams from both the 5A and 6A divisions can come and run on the State course.

“It’s called Pre-State because teams use this meet as a chance to run on the State course before the actual State meet,” head girls coach Sheryl McGreevy said.

The boys team placed 11 out of 19 teams overall and the girls’ team placed 9 overall out of 18. Runners who placed in the top 30 athletes received medals. Juniors Jose Aguilera placed 15 overall. The girls performed well with most of the team placing highly, Shay Burke placed 18 out of over 100 runners. The three inches of rain from the previous day made the course harder for the athletes to run on due to the fact that there were holes and puddles of mud that were created.

“It was hard because the course was so muddy from the rain, but we all ran really well and gave it our best effort,” junior Bella Casapao said.

The Cross Country Regional meet is Sat. Oct. 21 and will either be held in Norman or Tulsa. The State Meet will be held at Santa Fe on Oct. 28. To qualify for the State Meet, the teams must place in the top 7 overall at the Regional meet.

“If one of our teams doesn’t place in the top 7 an athletes can qualify for the State Meet if they place in the top 7 individual runners,” McGreevy said.
