On Oct. 8, Memorial’s own German teacher, Janet Holsaeter, ran in the 2017 Bank of America Chicago Marathon. She began running marathons in 1997 and ran one a year until 2001. She started started teaching again in 2004 and did not pick it back up until 2013.

“I like running because it is good exercise, and I like being outside. For me it is a great way to unwind and clear my head,” Holsaeter said.

Holsaeter and her husband began running together and ran the 2015 New York City marathon.

“It was such a fantastic experience that we decided to combine our love of running with our love of travel,” Holsaeter said.

They began their journey to run a marathon on each of the seven continents and all six of the Abbott World Marathon Majors. So far, they have run four of the Majors: New York, Berlin, Tokyo and the most recent, Chicago, and have run on five of the continents: North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa.

“My favorite was the Berlin Marathon because Germany holds a special place in my heart; I teach German, I lived in Germany and that is where I met my husband,” said Holsaeter.

Their next marathons will be the London Marathon, planned for April 2018 and the Outback in Australia for next September.
