On Aug. 20, 2018, the annual VMA awards on the MTV channel went live at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City.  There were several performances of the top trending pop and hip hop artists and some performances had sentimental meaning and stood out from the others.

While there were several acts by all of the well-known artists, Jennifer Lopez made an appearance and won this year’s Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. This is an award created in 1984 and it is in honor of Michael Jackson and represents an artist who recognizes accomplishment in music and film. Lopez was even rated as one of the top performances of the night. (vox.com.) The nominees who won awards, like Lopez, gave speeches to those who have influenced their music.

The award which stood out to the fans the most was Video With a Message. This award is based on situations in relation to controversial issues. Some of the songs up for nomination included “God’s Plan” by Drake and “This Is America” by Childish Gambino. Logic was also chosen for video with a message on his song, “1-800-273-8255,” which happens to be the phone number of the suicide prevention hotline. Winner of this award was Childish Gambino’s song,“This is America,” and its purpose is to evaluate racial issues and gun violence in society.

Logic performed “One Day” featuring Ryan Tedder and they addressed political tensions by walking on the stage holding hands with immigrant families and touching the souls of the crowd.

There were numerous celebrities attending this event and it was a very special night for these vocalists. Expansion and diversity may rise to surface as these artists continue to grow and develop new styles for music.
