On Dec. 17 in the presence of thousands of screaming OKC Thunder fans under the lights at the Chesapeake Energy Arena, senior Ahneycia Lofton took center court as a recipient of the $1,000 Thunder-Oklahoma University (OU) scholarship.

Jordan Horn, the Partner Activation Account Manager for the Oklahoma City Thunder professional basketball team, is the person responsible for the facilitation of the scholarships.

“Ahneycia authored an essay that was chosen by both OU and the Thunder because of her passion for her future in sports medicine and how she wants to be an example for future generations,” Horn said.

The first thing to happen is the applicant (Lofton) writes an essay that expresses how she will use the scholarship to better her community by going to college. After the Thunder chooses the recipients they believe are worthy those essays are sent to OU to be chosen by their own professors and then sent back to the Thunder for the 5 to be chosen and announced.

Ahneycia Lofton feels honored to be one of the five chosen through the two part selection process that the recipients go through.

“It’s a great opportunity for my future and I can’t thank my mom enough for her support during my high school career,” Lofton said.

After receiving the scholarship and going to college Lofton plans to major in sports medicine as an athletic trainer or a sports doctor.
