They are back, and they are red hot
February 18, 2022
Fans of the Red Hot Chili Peppers (RHCP) have been on their toes since December of 2019, when the band’s most popular guitarist John Frusciante, rejoined the band. Finally, after two years of waiting, the band is officially back with a new single “Black Summer,” released Feb. 4, 2022. Along with the song they released the title of their newest album “Unlimited Love,” on Apr. 1, 2022.
“Black Summer” sounds like the RHCP that fans know and love, which is what was missed after Frusciante left the band in 2009. Many fans have stated that this song reminds them of the “Stadium Arcadium” album. This RHCP song is more mellow compared to their previous music and less of their funk-rock/rap that they are also known for.
There are obvious changes like lead singer Anthony Kiedis’ new Irish accent. It sounds quite different because it’s never shown up in their music before, but does not take away from the greatness of the song. It still has poetic lyrics like many of their songs, and touches on the topics of depression, hinting at the term ‘black summer.’ I took the meaning of this song as the period without RHCP music and live performances now coming to an end.
The music video for the California-based band’s new song is a classic theme for RHCP, a concert in the sky. The video reminded me of the “Californication” music video when they were also having a sky concert. The resemblances could mean that they are digging their way back to the roots fans know and love.
Even as the band peaks into their 60s with the exception of Frusciante, 51 years old, their sound has yet to age and their fan base is continuing to grow into the younger generations.
Overall, it’s exciting to see the band back together performing with their 2022 tour lined up and releasing new music with the same feel as their well-known sound.
