A sea of neon in a darkened gym lit by black lights. Music blasting and energy skyrocketing. Edmond Memorial High School’s Swine Week Techno assembly was finally here.
To open the assembly, the EMHS Student Council started to hype up the crowd by doing a grade-by-grade “Can you dig it?,” and then proceeded to do a school-wide “Can you dig it?” before the lights suddenly turned off and black lights, glow sticks and neon outfits flooded the gym.
Once the crowd was glowing, the drumline made an entrance to play their iconic performance every year that featured drumming to songs like “Jump Around,” “Not Like Us,” “Stronger,” “St. Chroma” and closing with drum cadences. The energy rose and made people ready to watch the Techno dances.
The first grade to show off their routine was the freshmen. While the moves were interesting, some of the stunts did not land, and the songs did not transition smoothly, leaving all four judges to express their disappointment. With this year being the freshmen’s first Techno dance, there is time to improve and make a spectacular comeback.
Like the freshmen, the sophomores’ dance was also deemed lacking, especially when compared to the upperclassmen’s moves. However, the dance was a bit more put together than the freshmen. The end was the showstopper of their dance, with the music being “All of the Lights.” The judges, however, expected more and accused them of copying the Teachers vs Students halftime show.
Being known as the “loudest class,” the juniors were expected to pull out a stunning performance. This expectation was met when they had a clean and entertaining routine. This was the only dance that incorporated pom-poms as well. They also had cool tricks that had not been seen before. Two of the judges mentioned that they were underwhelmed, but the last judge liked the overall product of the performance.
The seniors knew they had to put on an amazing performance because it was their last Techno assembly. and that is exactly what they did. With props such as confetti, signs and flags, they had never-before-seen choreography and stunts. The human wave, people flying across the gym mats and an electric opener of everyone stretching their arms out to feature a student in the middle who is posing. The ending also stood out, and everyone knew that they won after the “Wicked” reference.
The seniors were announced as the winners, and all of them broke out in a “senior chant” to celebrate. To conclude the assembly, there was the traditional swag surf. The events will continue to be fun and raise money for The Comeback Kid Society. Techno is a crowd favorite every year with its high energy and exciting performances.
