This year new teachers for all different grades are joining Edmond Memorial High School (EMHS). Kristen Terrell is taking on educating Biology in the Freshman Academy.

Terrell served in the Navy and attended multiple universities before determining she wanted to become a teacher.

“I wasn’t the type that grew up knowing what I wanted to be, and it wasn’t until I had been in and out of the Navy before I finally decided to give it a try,” Terrell said.

During college life, she was able to explore a lot of the country while working toward her education.

“I have been to so many colleges, including: Colorado Mesa University, Casper College, Hawaii Pacific University, University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State- Oklahoma City, but I finished and graduated from Oklahoma City University.” Terrell said.

Being in her third year as an educator, she is glad to be here at EMHS after hearing many good things.

“So far it totally lives up to the hype. The students and staff are great and I couldn’t be happier,” Terrell said.

Biology is the study of living organisms and is usually taken as a freshman. Although Chemistry is her favorite type of science, Biology is also something she enjoys.

“Biology provides students such a large overview of many different areas, so it keeps life interesting since each unit covers different material,” Terrell said.

High school can be a different teaching experience, as the students are much older and more mature. Terrell expresses that as one of the reasons she chose to teach high school.

“High school is great because students are finally figuring out who they are and where they fit. I feel like it’s a time when interests and personalities grow so much,” Terrell said.

Leaping into a new job can be intimidating, but can bring up a lot of new opportunities. Terrell and every other new teacher have joined to help students grow in their knowledge and be ready for the real world. This is just the beginning of something new for the bulldogs.
