The Bills and Rams kick off the NFL season
September 16, 2022
The 2022 NFL season has begun, and to kick off the season the Buffalo Bills went head-to-head with the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Los Angeles Rams. The Bills put a beating on the defending champs with a final score of 31-10.
The All Pro quarterback-wide receiver duo of Josh Allen and Stefon Diggs led the Bills in their season debut and made a statement to set the tone for the season. Allen threw for 279 yards and three touchdowns, He and Diggs were able to rack up 122 yards together and a touchdown.
Although the Rams had difficulties scoring the ball, they did not simply lie down and die on the defensive side of the ball. All Pro defensive end, Aaron Donald and linebacker Bobby Wagner were both able to sack Allen in the backfield. Additionally the Rams defense was able to force Allen into throwing two interceptions.
The main flaw in the Rams game was clearly identifiable, their struggles lied in quarterback Matthew Stafford’s performance. Stafford only managed to complete 29 out of 41 passes and threw for one touchdown. This poor offensive performance combined with three interceptions and seven sacks led to a recipe for disaster for the Rams.
A possible cause of this poor game on Stafford’s end was his bias towards Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp. The Super Bowl MVP received 15 targets from Stafford. However, the second most targeted player on the team was tight end Tyler Higbee with 11 targets. Although Kupp is easily the best offensive player on the Rams, it would probably help their offense to diversify their playbook.
Nonetheless, the Bills and the Rams definitely put on a show to kick off the season. The Bills showed that they could be championship contenders this year especially with Allen and Diggs, and the Rams showed room to improve.
