On Sept. 13, the Edmond Memorial High School varsity football team battled against one of its Edlam rivals, the Edmond North varsity football team. This rivalry has been around for 30 years against the Huskies. Ultimately, the Bulldogs pulled it together for a 22-13 win.
The theme for the student section was White-out., so the student section wore as much white as possible. During half-time, the EMHS marching band, pom, and cheer performed. The support from these groups allowed the football team to gain the win against ENHS.
Justin Merideth is a first-year head varsity football coach and a computer class teacher. On a team, there will always be different aspects, strengths and weaknesses.
“So far some of our team’s strengths have been defensive line. They play at a very high level, which is what they are asked to do,” Merideth said. “Our kicking game this year is amazing.”
Throughout the whole game, the kicking game was precise. The kicker Ty Ackerman made many field goals, making three throughout the game.
“Ackerman has made some impressive punts and field goals,” Merideth said. “The last game, Ackerman made some amazing kicks, scoring us some points.”
At most EMHS football games and other sporting events, the EMHS student section, known as the Dog Pound, stands out. The different themes and energy it brings to the games help keep the players motivated and energetic.
“The energy is awesome,” Merideth said. “This is a huge effect of the game. The louder they get, the better they play.”
David McComb has been the head quarterback for two years. As the team’s quarterback, he has specific views on the strengths and weaknesses of the team.
“We all play for each other, and we all love each other,” Mccomb said. “This helps during the games. Sometimes we point fingers at each other during the games, and we get frustrated.”
In the audience of the game, Madyson Botello watched eagerly. Botello sat in the upper deck, cheering the Bulldogs to their win. This was Botello’s first EMHS varsity football game. In her first experience, Botello was surprised to see how the performances played out compared to other schools.
“I was shocked to see how well the football team played and to see all the performances played,” Botello said. “This was not like other schools, there is some talent here.”
For their next game, the EMHS football team is playing Norman North. Currently, the Bulldogs are 2-1 and are hoping to clutch more wins for future games.
