While temperatures are still in the mid-90s, many people are looking forward to the chilly weather, cozy blankets and spooky movies that come with autumn weather. One of the highest-anticipated aspects of the new season is the fashion that comes with the shift in weather. While many fashion-forward folks have already planned or started wearing their fall ensembles, some may be a bit stumped on ways to step up their wardrobe for fall. These are the top four ways to transform a wardrobe from bland to sugar, spice and everything nice without breaking the bank.
- Denim for days
While it may seem overly simple to some, fall is truly denim’s time to shine. A good pair of jeans can go with just about anything, from T-shirts and hoodies to knit sweaters and coats. Different cuts and styles of jeans can also add more flattering shapes to an outfit. I have noticed wide-legged and bootcut jeans becoming more popular in recent years because of the interesting silhouette they add to outfits. While new denim can be pricey, it is definitely worth having a few nicer options to choose from to add a bit of variety throughout the week. Thrifting is a cost-effective way to look for jeans as well. Thrift stores such as Goodwill or consignment stores such as TJ Maxx, Uptown Cheapskate and Daisy Exchange tend to have much cheaper options that are still decent quality brands, although it can take a bit of searching to find a good pair!
- Layers upon layers
Layering clothes is not only fashionable but is also a perfect solution for the unpredictable Oklahoma weather that is experienced during the autumn months. When temperatures are 35 degrees in the morning but then 80 degrees in the afternoon, I often find myself throwing on a flannel shirt or cardigan over my outfit to match the weather. Whenever it becomes colder during November and December, outfits can also be layered under rather than over. Layering under refers to adding more layers underneath the main piece of clothing, such as a long sleeve shirt under a graphic T-shirt or a turtleneck under a sweatshirt or sweater. Outfits with more layers can look a bit more personalized in this way because it can appear to be more put-together. Since the idea of layering allows for off-season clothes to be recycled, this is a rather budget- friendly option. For example, wearing fleece-lined stockings under short, summery skirts or zip-up jackets over tank tops can allow for pieces to be reused while taking the new season into account.
- Prints, patterns and pretty colors
Much like how autumn brings out a new set of hues for tree leaves, fun patterns and colors often come out of the woodwork during this season. Earthy colors are in fashion during this time of the year, such as muted orange, brown and off-white. While all of these are great options, some people are more inclined to wear brighter colors. In this situation, balance is the best way to go. Centering an outfit around a neutral piece, such as a white turtleneck or brown top, and then layering it with louder colors and prints can appear to be more interesting than a fully monochromatic outfit. This can be achieved through red or green flannels, cardigans or even floral jackets. Clothes can have fun colors while still feeling fall-like, as well. Heavy-knit sweaters of just about any color are well within these bounds, and they leave room for more prints and patterns. Stripes, argyle and checkers are common patterns that can add movement and extra style to any look while still fitting a cozy autumn aesthetic.
- Time to “step” it up
In my experience, shoes can either make or break an outfit. While tennis shoes can go with just about anything, they do not stand out in the same way that a good pair of boots can. In the past year, UGG mini boots and slippers have been trending. These shoes create a cozy feel in outfits while still looking classy. An added bonus is that they are incredibly comfortable, which is perfect for long school days and cold mornings. For those who prefer a more alternative look, Dr. Martens boots are also a good option. While classic leather lace-up boots are a safe, timeless choice, they also carry a wide selection of platform shoes and Chelsea boots as alternate options. I know that both of these brands are on the pricier side, but luckily similar types of shoes can be found online on Amazon or at Target. Combat boots can be found at thrift stores as well. Nonetheless, a nice pair of shoes is the perfect way to pull an outfit together when stumped, and boots are a great way to add autumn-like flair to a wardrobe.
Changes in weather bring changes in wardrobes, and even the smallest tweaks to outfits can transform their entire look. So, this autumn, play around with style and see what sticks! By incorporating some of these tips into an outfit, anyone can bring a touch of fall flair to their everyday look.
