On Oct. 4, the Edmond Memorial High School varsity football team played its homecoming game against the Bulldogs’ district rivals, the Edmond Santa Fe Wolves. After an energetic week of dress-up days, the Bulldogs pulled through and won with a score of 35-7, making the EMHS varsity football team the city champion for the Edmond district.
The theme for the student section was Rock ‘N Roll, and the students wore the official HoCo shirt or their favorite band shirt. During the half-time show, the EMHS marching band, pom and cheer performed their routine from competition. The marching band played their performance they played during competition. With the support from these groups, they helped cheer the team to victory.
Every team has its strengths and weaknesses, and there will always be different points of view and aspects for every situation. Justin Merideth, the head varsity football coach, mentions the different strengths they have.
“We are a very physical football team, and I’m a big believer that it is very important,” Merideth said. “We are starting to throw the ball well, and our passing game is better than [it ever has been]. One of the kickers, Ty Ackerman, has played great this year.”
Every coach and player has a goal for their team. One of the main goals for the game was for everyone to have fun and take home the win.
“I know that we had a good week of practice before the game,” Merideth said.“Our players were mentally and physically ready to play the game. I knew that we had a good chance of winning, but we [still] played our best.”
The EMHS student section, also known as the Dog Pound, showed all of its support by chanting and cheering for the team.
“In 20 years of coaching football, they inspire me and the team,” Meredith said. “They get loud at the right times, they are amazing. They make the games so fun.”
The football team is always playing to win the title of city champions. Senior David McComb, the head quarterback for the EMHS varsity football team, shares this ambition.
“It’s always the goal to win city champs, but we have bigger goals,” McCombs said. “We want to make the playoffs, but we have most of the season ahead.”
In the stands, Justin Dickson, an Edmond local, went to watch the football game. During the game, Dickson was cheering the Bulldogs to their victory. Many moments throughout the game stuck out to her, from the action in the game itself and the intense energy in the stadium’s student section.
“I enjoyed watching the game, I played football when I was in high school,” Dickson said. “When the student section started chanting, the stadium felt like it was going to fall down.”
From the supportive performances of pom, cheer and band to how the EMHS varsity team played against one of its rivals. In the end, the Bulldogs pulled it together for a 35-7 win. Their next game will be against the Yukon Millers, where they will strive yet again to capture the victory.
