At Edmond Memorial High School, the annual event known as Swine Week is taking place from March 10 through 14. For nearly 40 years, this philanthropy week has raised money for charities that aid communities in need in the OKC area. This year, the Swine Week recipient is The Comeback Kid Society, and the common thread between the Edmond high schools is No Boundaries International.
On Tuesday, the fundraising assembly was “Teachers vs. Students,” and the dress-up theme was “Jersey,” a Swine Week classic. To start the assembly, Nick Swartz, also known as “Kid Prexy” played the national anthem on the electric guitar.
The first student-versus-teacher competition was the dodgeball tournament. The students won by a landslide, with the game lasting approximately 10 minutes. Even though the students won this event, the staff maintained school spirit and took the loss gracefully.
Next came the basketball tournament. The score during the first half was 11-9 with the students in the lead. Then, teachers put on a show for the half-time performance, gaining attention and laughs from the crowd of students. With the male teachers performing multiple songs such as “Drop It Like It’s Hot.” At the end of the tournament, the score was 28-25 with the students scoring in the last second to secure the win and the students cheered over their successful win.
In the next event, AP English teachers Kevin McDonald and Regan Killackey competed in the father-daughter questionnaire against Emily McDonald and Scout Killackey. The teachers lost to their daughters, meaning they had to do a dare that the student council had set up for them.
“I had to chug Cane’s sauce, so that has left a searing impression on me,” McDonald said.
The event ended with the annual BBQ wrestling competition. The wrestlers were Wes Madden and Will Bajema. With BBQ sauce stinging their eyes and causing them to slip, Bagema came out on top, cheered on by the crowd.
In the end, the second Swine Week assembly was yet another success. Tuesday’s assembly is a favorite of many as it puts the teachers against the students. Today the assembly is the Techno Dance, so be ready to open your hearts and wallets, for the kids!
