“The Story:” a true story of childhood woes
January 21, 2020
Pop singer Conan Gray dropped his new song “The Story” Jan. 9, as an introduction into his debut album Kid Krow that will be released March 20. All 12 songs on the track are written by Gray which will give a more emotional look into the way he views love and the world as a whole.
The song starts off with Gray’s soft melodic voice that immediately brings the listener in and captivates them as he tells a story about lost love and the ups and downs of his childhood.
Gray has briefly talked about his childhood and his bad relationship with his parents in the past, as well as how he felt that at one particularly low point, he didn’t know it would be worth it to continue living. His song highlights his feelings that the world “ain’t funny, it ain’t pretty, it ain’t sweet,” but later he sings about how his story needs to continue, even if things in life are hard.
The song fulfills Gray’s purpose of telling about his constantly unsafe past and the thoughts of a young boy afraid to love as he wanted and the emotional trials one can face when their life growing up is simply filled with abuse.
This track is truly a masterpiece that evokes deep emotions and is personally my favorite song that Gray has released throughout the years.
Along with “The Story,” “Maniac,” “Checkmate” and “Comfort Crowd” are also songs that have been released ahead of the album release date. All of these songs were released in 2019 to give fans a teaser at what the full album will be like and were all extremely popular, with “Maniac” being undoubtedly the biggest hit of the group achieving over 50 million streams.
As well as releasing this new album for 2020, Gray is set to perform at Coachella April 12 and 19. Gray is hopeful that this album will give a look into his feelings and show his emotions in a deeper way that fans haven’t seen from him yet. If the rest of the songs in the album are as emotional and raw as “The Story” was, he will definitely accomplish his goal.
