One day each year, an entire grade of high school students skip class in a tradition called Senior Skip Day. Senior Skip Day is an event in which many seniors skip school to participate in enjoyable activities as a class, which traditionally includes the state fair. Students often choose the day and this year, students chose a Friday, so seniors enjoyed a long weekend. Senior Skip Day has been a tradition for students everywhere, giving them a day off in their last year of high school.
Although an unofficial holiday, many seniors spend plenty of time planning how they want to spend their senior-only long weekend. There is no doubt that there is entertainment for the whole day, with things such as rides, games, and food stands at the fair.
“My favorite thing about Senior Skip Day is the excitement beforehand,” senior Madison Brown said. “It’s entertaining to see who all is planning to skip and it’s fun to make your own plans for the day.”
The tradition of Senior Skip Day goes back to the 1930’s, although the tradition was popularized during the 1980s and 1990s. Even though decades old, the tradition has remained strong into modern times.
“I think Senior Skip Day is an incredible tradition,” senior Bryce Foster said. “It allows the seniors all to skip school, meet up and strengthen relationships with other seniors.”
Since senior year is packed full of stress, everything from college application deadlines, to AP classes and senioritis, it easy to become overwhelmed. Having a day off to just have fun is something to look forward to for the senior class.
“It helps seniors unwind and get away from all the stress of college applications, growing up, any advanced classes and being the best class in the school,” senior Noah Buoy said.
While many choose to go to the state fair, some choose to stay home and relax or participate in other activities they may enjoy. Regardless of how one chooses to spend the day off, it is good to have a day to rest.
Year after year, seniors plan a day on which they can skip out on the stress of school and do something relaxing with their fellow classmates. Many enjoy this tradition, and hopefully the tradition of Senior Skip Day will continue for years to come, allowing Seniors their own special day.
