In celebration of Halloween, Edmond Memorial High School hosts a Scary Movie Night every year in late October. This year was no different, with students meeting up on the football field as the 2019 film “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” played on the big screen. Scary Movie Night proved that all someone needs to have some Halloween fun is to be with their friends and watch a scary movie.
The football field was a great location choice for the spooky night. The openness of the field allowed for everyone to spread out and claim a spot with their friends while also allowing other students to meet up with each other, even if they did not arrive together. The weather was great for a night like this. It was not too cold, but it was very windy, allowing for the opportunity to bundle up in a cozy blanket while watching the movie.
The film choice, “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark,” is a wonderful decision for a night like this. The film is scary enough to create a tense mood and keep everyone on the edge of their seats. However, it is not so scary that it made people uncomfortable or upset. Personally, I am not a huge fan of horror movies or jump scares, but I had no problem with the film.
Another nice touch of Scary Movie Night is the price. It can be hard for teenagers to find cheap ways to spend time together, so any affordable opportunity is a nice one. Tickets were only $5, as opposed to an actual movie ticket, which is usually around $9 depending on the theater. They were also selling cheap concessions, which included candy and water.
The only critique I would make is that it ended at around 9:30, which can be late to be out on a school night. However, the late start and end are understandable as the movie would not have been the same if it had not been shown in the dark.
The EMHS tradition of Scary Movie Night is one of the best. It is obvious that the students enjoyed the event by the laughter heard between friends and the engagement of all students enjoying the movie.
