Edmond families came to Edmond Memorial High School to participate in Tuesday’s Swine Week night event, aptly named Family Night. Families and students attended a lighthearted magic show, a competitive game of singo and a jazzy performance from the Old Bulldog Band. The assembly was a win-win, as families spent a fun-filled night together and Swine Week raised money for Special Care.
From 5 to 5:30 p.m., student council members hosted tours of the school fully decked out in Swine FM decorations. While students see the decorated hallways during the school day, their parents and younger siblings cannot. The opportunity for outside community members to see the artwork covering every hallway was a clever way to show families exactly how hard Memorial’s students work to make Swine Week successful.
After families finished their tour of campus, Bryan Welch hosted a magic show with a $5 entry fee in the lower commons. Welch came out in full costume performing as Gandalf the Grey from the popular fantasy series, “The Lord of the Rings.” The show included many classic magic tricks, with some involving audience participation.
The show was a hit, especially for the younger kids there. Welch was a great performer and wowed the audience. Every joke received laughter from the entire audience, and every trick caused gasps and applause. It was so much fun to watch and participate in, and hopefully, the event comes back next year as well.
Once the magic show was finished, families moved to the Freshman Academy cafeteria to play a game of singo. Singo is just like a normal game of bingo, but instead of calling out a number, the hosts play snippets of songs. Singo was my personal favorite event of the night, as I enjoyed playing the game with my friends and singing my heart out to the songs I knew. The DJ was a Memorial alumnus, and he was amazing. He would walk around the tables during rounds and make conversation and jokes with every participant. The music for singo included pop hits from recent years, ensuring the kids in the audience recognized them instantly.
The next activity in Family Night was a performance from the Old Bulldog Band, a group of Memorial alumni who gathered to perform a few songs in the auditorium. The band sounded incredible and played classic hits such as “I’m a Believer” by The Monkees and “It’s Not Unusual” by Tom Jones.
Family Night was an undeniable success and an easy way for families and friends to spend quality time together. There were smiles all around the campus throughout the night.
