Edmond Memorial High School hosted a car show in the west lot for the final Swine Week night event, where members of the Edmond community could show their vehicles off for a $20 entry fee. There were many types of cars students viewed, ranging from vintage cars to sports cars.
One of the vehicles entered in the show was a 1976 Volkswagen bus, entered by community member James Stuart. Stuart found the vehicle online and bought it for around $600 because he wanted to fix it up. The journey to pick up the car from Gilroy, California, created fun family memories for Stuart and his family.
“I got my dad’s truck and farm trailer, and we drove straight out to Gilroy, California, . . . and we drove all the way out there,” Stuart said. “It was me and my wife, my brother, my sister and a friend. It happened to be raining that day [we arrived], so it was all muddy and slick. We didn’t even have keys for it, and the wheels were locked.”
Stuart decided to enter his car in the show because his friend from high school asked him to. He decided to come out with his friends and support Swine Week’s cause.
“Well, my friend from high school invited me to come over,” Stuart said. “I said, ‘Yeah, I’ll come out.’ He knew that I had the Volkswagen, and he said, ‘You should come out and support Swine Week.’”
There were also many students who participated in the show. For example, junior Marco Scamehorn entered his 2000 C5 Corvette. Scamehorn often presents his car in car shows and decided to participate in the Swine Week show because of the cause.
“Well, I’ve taken it to a lot of car shows,” Scamehorn said. “So, [I] might as well take it to a car show where the money’s gonna go somewhere that matters.
There were also parents of students there participating in the car show. Jamie Adamson decided to enter his 1983 Jeep C37 because his son, Adam Adamson, is a freshman at Memorial this year.
“Well, I came last year,” Adamson said. “My son’s a freshman this year on StuCo, so he is one of the ones in charge of the car show, so I definitely wanted to bring it this year.”
All money raised by the participants of the Swine Week car show will go toward the final total to benefit Special Care. The car show for a cause drew in many people showing off their cars for many different reasons, but most of all, to support the kids.
