On Wednesday, April 16, the Spring Sports Assembly was held at Edmond Memorial High School, an annual tradition to honor the accomplishments of athletes participating in winter and spring sports and announce upcoming sporting events. In addition to spring sports, EMHS honors seniors who have regularly been involved in sports throughout their high school careers. Students are asked to participate in voting to determine Mr. and Miss All-Sport.
The assembly started with a performance of the national anthem by senior Laynee Harper. Next, the EMHS tradition of “Can you dig it?” was led across all grades. Afterward, the senior Dog Pound leaders were recognized for the school spirit they have brought during their time at Memorial by Coach Kyle Roberts.
Baseball was commended for its 22-2 lead this season. It was also announced that the regional tournament will be hosted at Memorial soon.
“What those guys failed to mention was that they are currently ranked number one in the state and number eight in the country,” Roberts said.
Boys and girls tennis was recognized for its continuing accomplishments. Varsity tennis player Lauren Krise, also a candidate for Miss All-Sport, led a summary of the team’s season so far and announced that the team would host a tournament at Edmond Center Court on Saturday, April 19.
“This year we have a lot of talented players with a lot of potential,” Krise said.
Golf was introduced next by Coach Heath Steele. Steele explained that EMHS has a wonderful golf program this season, and the team has high hopes to reach the state competition in May.
Track was also recognized for their accomplishments, including both the boys and girls teams, and their performance amidst a competitive season.
“We’ve done a phenomenal job,” track coach Seth Mead said. “We’ve been very, very consistent.”
Boys and girls soccer was recognized, with girls soccer securing a spot in the upcoming playoffs. The boys soccer team is also undefeated in district games. Furthermore, it was announced that the playoffs will be held at Edmond North High School on Friday, April 25.
Mr. and Miss All-Sport began with the announcing of each candidate, which sport they have played at Memorial, their favorite memory while playing the sport and their plans following high school. After the candidates were introduced, the winners were announced to be CC Nichols and Rhett Winchester, who play soccer and baseball, respectively.
The assembly was closed with another EMHS tradition for assemblies, the swag surf. This being the last assembly of the school year, seniors were encouraged to participate in one of their last traditions at Memorial. Each spring sport was excited to announce its accomplishments this season, and hopes that the Dog Pound, Memorial’s student section, will show up to be supportive of each sport.
