The new romantic comedy, “Eternity,” was released in theaters on Nov. 26 and has been praised for its clever take on the afterlife. From the humor, emotion and thought-provoking plot, this movie was destined to be successful and did not disappoint.
“Eternity” follows married couple Joan and Larry after they pass away and make it into the afterlife, where they must choose just one place to spend eternity. However, the choice becomes complicated for them when Joan’s ex-husband, Luke, shows up and reveals he has been waiting for Joan to arrive since he passed away 67 years ago. Joan explores what her life would be like with either husband and decides who she is going to be with forever.
The concept for this movie is incredibly engaging. Afterlife interpretations are often interesting because of just how different each one is. I enjoyed how “Eternity” was able to balance the dark themes of death with romance and comedy. It makes viewers forget that the movie is following the afterlife because of the jokes and charming romantic lines.
My one complaint about the plot of the movie is the pacing. The movie is about two hours long, and the love triangle is seemingly solved within the first half. However, the second part takes a bit of an emotional twist as Joan has to run to be with whom she truly wants to be with. It felt odd as the movie was advertised to be all about Joan’s choice. However, I was still engaged the whole time.
Without a doubt, the highlight of the movie was the cast. Every actor nailed their comedic lines and emotional moments. For example, the duo between actor Miles Teller as Larry and actress Da’Vine Joy Randolph as Anna had me laughing every time they interacted. Their chemistry was unmatched, and both actors’ comedic timing and delivery were perfect. When I was not laughing at them, I was tearing up because of the emotion that Elizabeth Olsen brought with her scenes. Her portrayal of Joan was perfect, and I truly felt her struggle with picking between Larry and Luke. Every member of the cast was cast perfectly, and their chemistry with each other on screen was amazing.
Every detail in “Eternity” made the movie as great as it was. The music by composer David Fleming was one of the best parts. Every song was beautiful and matched the romantic, dreamy mood of the movie, invoking intense emotion in every scene.
Another important detail was the set. Most of the movie takes place in what is called the “Junction,” the in-between space, while one chooses which eternity to stay in. It was set up as what was essentially a big train station, which included pop-up stations for each eternity. Some of the eternity choices were jokes, such as “eternity without men,” and some were just natural places like the beach. The set was clever and allowed for some of the best jokes in the movie.
Ultimately, “Eternity” was a funny, beautiful movie that left the audience thinking about those they love. By combining elements of a traditional romantic comedy and a creative plot, it became one of the best movies released recently.
