The Edmond Memorial High School girls track season is heading into its final stretch as they progress toward their state competition. The girls track team is looking to become back-to-back state champions as the season comes to an end.
Throughout the season, a common goal that most teams have is winning state. Right now, the girls track team is working to defend its state title after winning last year. Tyler Sergent is the current head coach who led the team to their state title last year.
“We are extremely focused and beginning the process of dialing in for the state meet,” Sergent said. “This group has taken the challenge ahead of them very seriously and has worked hard to prepare for this last push towards state. We ultimately have our eyes on defending our state title. This is a huge task, but our girls will be prepared and ready for their moment.”
Teams focus on working as a group to achieve their goals for each season. One of the people helping the girls achieve their goals is distance head coach Ansen Covin, who has seen this plan work firsthand through the team’s record-breaking season.
“This has been a very successful group. We have seen personal bests [evenly] across all groups,” Covin said. “Our school record for the 3200 meter, pole vault and distance medley relay have all been broken this season, and we anticipate maybe a couple others being broken before the end of the season.”
Senior Braelynn Roberts competes in the track events. While participating in an event, Roberts blocks out all the background noise to focus on her own race, which allows her to focus on her own race rather than her surroundings.
“I’m chipping away with [my] times on the track, and I’m prepared for what I can show at state,” Roberts said. “It takes a lot to stay calm and focused before a race. I intentionally block out all of the outside noise and focus on what’s waiting for me at the end.”
Even with all the hard work and broken records, the girls season has not yet come to an end. With regionals coming up, they are looking forward to winning their events and making it to their final challenge of the season, the state championship.
