Mary Johnson has been awarded Teacher of the Year!

The Teacher of the Year award is an achievement every teacher aspires to receive. These teachers must empower, educate, inspire and advocate for their students, both inside and outside of the classroom. Edmond Memorial High School’s 2023-2024 teacher of the year is Mary Johnson, who goes above and beyond for her students every day.
Johnson teaches government, US history, and world history. Because of her hard work in these courses, she has helped shape the futures of many of her students, making her a key part of their lives.
“I try to make sure that my students know that I am here for them, that I love them and that I truly care about their well-being and who they are as people,” Johnson said.
This dedication does not go unnoticed. EMHS’s Freshman Principal and Johnson’s lifelong friend, Carrie Higdon, has full belief that Johnson creates an optimistic environment for her students every day.
“Her kids love and adore her,” Higdon said. “She brings a lot of energy and positivity. I’ve seen her go above and beyond to help students.”
Johnson’s energy makes a great candidate for not only EMHS TOY but also district TOY. The process is a long one, but it is worth it in the end. It starts with a vote by the EMHS teachers, for the school-wide TOY, and then Johnson will have to go through a long list of requirements in order to become the Edmond TOY.
To be nominated for the district-level TOY, Johnson must create a video over her teaching philosophies, including the testimonials of her students and coworkers. One of her students, Reginald Powell, is a supporter of her receiving the award.
“She impacted my life a lot in many ways,” Powell said. “She’s like another mom to me.”
With the honor of love from her students and coworkers, Johnson is a representative example for the award. She strives to make a difference every day and create a positive environment for her students.
“I want everyone to feel successful and I want them to be surrounded by love, care and compassion,” Johnson said.
The impact Johnson has while in the classroom is tremendous. With Johnson’s devotion, she was separated from others in the teaching environment, pushing her to be one of the greatest options for The Teacher of the Year award.
